Overview 

The Category Performance Dashboard provides cannabis industry professionals with insights into sales performance, pricing trends, and brand competitiveness across product categories. This tool is essential for brand managers, producers, and retailers to evaluate category-level dynamics, identify growth opportunities, and refine product strategies. 

The dashboard enables users to analyze multiple levels of product categories, measure pricing types, and explore top-performing strains and flavors within their markets. 

 

Using the Dashboard 

  • Select a Territory: Filter data by state, region, or county to focus on specific markets. Use the dropdowns and click "Apply Changes" to refresh the data. 
  • Category Levels: Drill down into category performance across hierarchical levels (Level 1 through Level 5) for a more granular analysis. 
  • Pricing Type: Use the “Pricing Type” dropdown to toggle between specific pricing metrics for your selected categories. 
  • Metric Selection: Focus on key performance metrics such as Dollars, Units, $ Velocity, and Unit Velocity to measure sales efficiency. 
  • Analyze Trends: Review trends in Category Share of Sales and top-performing strains/flavors. 

 

Key Pricing Types 

The Pricing Type dropdown includes the following values: 

  1. Original List Price 
  1. Represents the standard listed price for products within a category. 
  1. Useful for benchmarking pricing strategies against the broader market. 
  1. Discounted List Price 
  1. Tracks prices adjusted for promotions or discounts. 
  1. Helps assess the impact of price reductions on sales performance. 
  1. Purchase Price 
  1. Displays the average price paid by customers at the point of sale. 
  1. Reflects actual consumer behavior and price sensitivity. 
  1. All 
  1. Includes data for all pricing types to provide a comprehensive overview of pricing dynamics. 

 

Key Metrics Available 

The dashboard allows users to analyze the following key metrics for selected categories: 

  • Dollars 
    • Measures total sales value for products within a category. 
    • Highlights revenue contribution across categories and pricing types. 
  • Units 
    • Tracks the number of units sold. 
    • Helps identify demand trends and high-performing product segments. 
  • $ Velocity 
    • Measures sales value relative to availability. 
    • Indicates how efficiently products generate revenue across categories. 
  • Unit Velocity 
    • Tracks product movement (units sold) relative to availability. 
    • Highlights product efficiency and consumer demand. 
  • # of Brands 
    • Displays the number of competing brands within a selected category. 
    • Helps users assess category competitiveness and market saturation. 

 

Insights Provided by the Dashboard 

  • Category Share of Sales: Analyze rising and falling share trends for categories over time. 
  • Top Strains/Flavors: View the top 10 performing strains/flavors by sales or units within a category (e.g., Apple Fritter, Sour Diesel, or Wedding Cake). 
  • Pricing Analysis: Compare Original List Price, Discounted Price, and Purchase Price to identify optimal pricing strategies. 
  • Category Performance Trends: Monitor changes in Dollars, Units, and Velocity metrics over different time aggregations (Day, Week, Month). 

 

Pro Tips 

  • Use Discounted List Price and Purchase Price to understand the effect of promotions on sales and consumer purchasing behavior. 
  • Combine $ Velocity and Unit Velocity metrics to pinpoint high-performing categories that drive revenue efficiency. 
  • Track Category Share of Sales to identify emerging trends or areas of underperformance.
