Product coding rules to keep Ohio's purchase regulations in-line with all BDSA Tracked Markets
Market-Specific Metrics
The Ohio market differs from all other states that BDSA tracks due to its unique purchasing limit regulations. As a result, BDSA built specific metrics to allow for data comparisons across all BDSA-tracked markets. More information on Ohio purchasing limits can be found here: State of Ohio, Board of Pharmacy | Whole-Day Unit Policy Update
Flower
Flower in Ohio is sold in multiples of “whole-day units,” where one whole-day unit equals one-tenth of an ounce or 2.83g. Both pack and EQ units and pricing will be reflective of the BDSA pack sizes reflected below rather than the Ohio specific pack sizes.
In Ohio, Flower will be coded according to the below rules:
- When the pack weight is 2.83g, the attributed pack size will be 3.5g.
- When the pack weight is 5.66g, the attributed pack size will be 7g.
- When the pack weight is 14.15g, the attributed pack size will be 14g.
- When the pack weight is 28.3g, the attributed pack size will be 28g.
Edibles
A whole-day unit for Edibles in Ohio is up to 110mg of THC. Therefore, OH typically uses multiples of 11ct (i.e., 110mg, 220mg, 330mg) instead of the common 5-10ct multiples seen in other markets. Additionally, the OH market has edibles with multiple count variations for the same product (e.g., a product will be available in 15ct, 18ct, 20ct, and 22ct packages). Presumably, this is due to testing results vs. target dosage and limitations set forth by state regulations.
In Ohio, Edibles will be coded according to the below rules:
- When the pack weight is <25mg, the attributed pack size will be rounded to the nearest whole number.
- When the pack weight is >/=25mg and <100mg, the attributed pack size will be 50mg.
- When the pack weight is >/=100mg, the attributed pack size will be rounded to the nearest 100mg.
Vapes
A whole-day unit for Vapes in Ohio is up to 590mg of THC (note that this is based on THC and not the total weight of the oil). Therefore, varying pack weights are seen in OH for vapes that do not follow the 500mg/1000mg trend that we usually see in other markets. One of the most common weights identified in OH for Vapes is 840mg, so BDSA provides this size as a pack size option.
In Ohio, Vapes will be coded according to the below rules (with few exceptions):
- When the pack weight is >/=280mg and </=320mg, the attributed pack size will be 300mg.
- When the pack weight is >320mg and </=650mg, the attributed pack size will be 500mg.
- When the pack weight is >650mg and </=1500mg, the attributed pack size will be 840mg.
